Family's Introduction to Au Pair

Come join us as an au pair in our loving, fun family!! We live in the beautiful, charming and accessible city of Munich, close to the mountains and lakes of Bavaria but only 20 minutes by tram or bike to the city center. We have two lovely boys, ages 5 and 8. Our kids are well-behaved, energetic, affectionate and fun!

We are looking for a family-oriented, responsible, honest, loving, mature and easy-going au pair who genuinely likes children and is a native English speaker. We prefer candidates with some university education, who can provide a stimulating experience for the kids, like being outdoors and can ride a bike. We are seeking someone who is out-going and adventurous. Experience living abroad is a plus, but is not required.

We are an American/German couple living together in Munich since 2014; we are easy-going, flexible, open-minded and generous and we are seeking someone to start in the fall and stay for one year.

We offer a flexible schedule with lots of free time -- you will typically work about 4 hours per day (mostly afternoons) and will have most of the weekend free. You will have a private room in our little house in the lovely Sendling-Westpark neighborhood of Munich, 20 minutes from the city center by tram or bike, across from beautiful Westpark and only 15 minutes from Oktoberfest!

We offer a good compensation package with spending money (400 Euros per month), room and board, health insurance, a monthly transit pass, a SIM card, a bicycle, and money towards German courses.

Last but not least, we will treat you like you are part of our family and want you to feel at home in our home. We understand that an au pair wants to look after children, but also wants to explore her new country – and we'd love to help! We can’t wait to speak with you to see if we are a good fit. Looking forward to meeting you and hopefully welcoming you into our home in the fall!

All the best,
Gretchen & Alessandro

Job Description

We are a friendly, out-going, German-American family of four and are looking for an au pair to help care for our two sweet and fun-loving boys (5 and 8 years old). Mom is American and dad is German-Italian – all four of us are bilingual in English and German (and dad speaks Italian). We also have a very loving Goldendoodle (almost 1 year old) who loves to cuddle and completes our family.

We are looking for an au pair who is a native English speaker, energetic and fun-loving and can work approximately 30 hours per week. As a general rule, the kids are in school/day care/kindergarten until 4:00 pm Monday to Thursday and until 3:00 pm on Fridays, so your weekdays would generally be free until then. But from there each day might be a little different, so it’s important to us that you are comfortable with a semi-flexible schedule – meaning that one or two days a week might differ from week-to-week. Our schedules and the kids’ schedules vary a little each day, and therefore we would ask for some flexibility in terms of scheduling.

General duties include:
• Picking up either one or both of the kids and taking him/them to the playground or to soccer/gymnastics/music class, etc.
• Helping the kids clean up their toys and their rooms.
• Playing together – outdoors at the park or playground, indoors with toy or with crafts.
• Helping with light household chores, such as occasionally unloading the dishwasher or taking out the recycling, here and there stopping by the grocery store for a simple shop with the kids after pick-up or possibly helping with the kids’ laundry.

Tasks that vary day-to-day/week-to-week include:
• Feeding the kids something we have prepared in advance or (less often) preparing a light dinner for them.
• Preparing the kids’ lunch boxes for the next day.
• Helping to put either one (or both) kids to bed on nights that one (or both) of us are out for the evening (not more than one or two times per week).
• Taking the dog out here and there for a walk.
• Occasionally making breakfast or lunch for the kids on a weekend and/or taking them out so we can get some chores done at home.
• On extremely rare occasions, preparing breakfast and dropping them off at school/kindergarten in the morning.

In terms of benefits, we will of course provide housing and meals (room and board) in our single-family home. We live in a middle row house with a small back garden – you’ll have your own room with a small balcony overlooking our small back yard and will share a bathroom with the kids. We will also provide:
• a salary of 350€ per month;
• health insurance;
• a monthly public transportation ticket that allows you to travel freely in Munich on all public transportation and on regional trains throughout Germany – we live fairly centrally in Munich and have easy access to the public transportation system;
• a local SIM card with data;
• a bike that you can use while you’re here – Munich is very easy to get around with by bike with lots of bike paths and training for drivers to be aware of cyclists;
• money to help pay for language classes, if you are interested in learning German; and
• four paid weeks of vacation per year.

We would love to arrange a video call with you to discuss all the other details, what you might need while you are here and what we hope that you can help with. We very much look forward to meeting you and welcoming you into our family!
